The Department for Education has launched the first stage of a £200 million programme to improve SEND training for education staff across England.

Free, practical training materials are available for mainstream schools and post-16 settings.
Resources cover inclusive teaching, adapting support, and speech, language and communication needs.
Suggested techniques include breaking instructions into smaller steps, pre-teaching vocabulary, using visual timetables, and adapting environments.
Separate online training is being provided for early years staff through Dingley’s Promise.
The programme aims to help staff identify and support SEND needs earlier and reduce regional differences in provision.
Materials are adaptable and can be used throughout the year or during existing training days. Participation is encouraged but not compulsory.
Further resources are expected in early 2027, followed by fully funded training courses for teachers, leaders and support staff in autumn 2027.
The initiative responds to reported demand for more SEND training among teachers and teaching assistants.
The DfE has also published a related research report on how mainstream schools organise staff to support pupils with SEND.
